SOMSO describes itself as an independent, non-profit learned society guided by integrity, transparency, inclusiveness, and public service.
Its governance includes:
- A General Assembly as the supreme decision-making body, meeting at least every two years
- An Executive Council responsible for leadership and administration
- Standing committees covering research/publications, education/curriculum, Olympiads/talent development, outreach, and international cooperation
